Why lakeside slabs read high, and what we do about it

A slab-on-fill pour behaves differently from a slab poured on native grade. Compacted fill dirt near the lake holds a reservoir of moisture under the concrete, and that moisture keeps driving vapor up through the slab for years after the pour cures. So we test first, every time. Two methods on the same slab: an ASTM F1869 calcium chloride test that reads MVER in pounds per 1,000 sq ft over 24 hours, and F2170 in-situ relative humidity probes read at 40 percent slab depth. One number can lie on a lakeside slab. Two rarely do.

The not-for-you part on epoxy: if your garage slab is newer, dry on the test, and you only park a car in it, a full high-build epoxy system may be more than you need.
